In parsha Toldos, we read that
And Isaac loved Eisav, because of
trapped meat (צַ֣יִד - tzaid) in his mouth, while Rivkah loved Yaakov. (
Bereishit 25:28)
Rashi explains:
As the Targum renders it: in Isaac’s mouth (i.e. Isaac ate the trapped meat he brought home). But its Midrashic explanation is: there was hunting ( צַ֣יִד - tzaid) in Eisav's mouth, meaning that he used to entrap and deceive him by his words (Genesis Rabbah 63:10).
Question: How can a tzaddik such as Isaac be entrapped and fooled by Eisav with a piece of meat (tzaid)? The Midrash says that Eisav would ask questions about tithing salt and straw every time he came into the house of Isaac. Can a tzaddik really be fooled by such repeated questions, and wouldn't it raise suspicion in Isaac's mind that the question had already been asked on numerous occasions, and its repetition implies low IQ on the part of the questioner? Doesn't Isaac have any more noble and worthy reasons to love Eisav over Yaakov besides hearing daily the same silly questions about tithing salt and straw while eating trapped tzaid?
On a superficial level this is difficult to understand, but if we look deeper we find that yes indeed, there was a profound reason to love Eisav more than Yaakov. The key in solving this puzzle is by interpreting the phrase " eating tzaid" metaphorically, where eating ( ohal) means destroying as in
They shall devour ( eat - ohal) enemy nations, crush their bones, and smash their arrows. (Numbers 24:8)
and tzaid ( trapping) is interpreted as king Nimrod
He ( Nimrod) was a mighty entrapper ( tzaid) before Hashem, therefore it is said "As Nimrod, a mighty entrapper ( tzaid) before Hashem" (Genesis 10:9)
Therefore, Isaac eating tzaid means destroying Nimrod, Israel's arch enemy at the time, and bringing tzaid to Yaakov, is understood as his bringing the news about Nimrod to Isaac, which they consumed, i.e. discussed daily, in order to plan his destruction. We also see that Eisav was Nimrod's match, as he too is called one who knows hunting and trapping.
When the boys grew up, Esau became one who knows hunting ( tzaid), a man of the field; but
Yaakov was a pure
man, living in tents. (Genesis 25:27)
This supports the notion that Yaakov's love for Eisav was grounded in the belief that Eisav is a mighty hunter, a warrior, Nimrod's fearsome match, and a prototype of David, who was also red, just like Eisav, as it says:
So he sent and brought him in. Now he (David) was red, with beautiful eyes and a good-looking appearance. And the Lord said, 'Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!' (1 Samuel 16:12)
Yaakov therefore loved Eisav, because he believed that he is destined for war and greatness, just like David, whose name is spelled דָּוִד which has the same letters as the word דּוֹד, dod, which means beloved. Thus, Eisav was worthy of love, just like David. He believed that Eisav would avenge Nimrod's killing of Haran, Avraham's brother, and drive Cnaan invaders from the Promised Land.
Yet, Isaac was deceived, because even though he was potentially as great as David, he was in it for himself, and his goal was not to defeat Nimrod and his 4 empires (Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh - Genesis 10:10-12) in order to bring about the knowledge of God and establish the Kingdom of Heaven upon earth, as Avraham and Isaac were commanded to do, but to build a rebellious, cruel and corrupt empire of his own, which eventually became known as Rome. This was his deception and entrapment that he put into Isaac's mouth.
