Devarim/Ki Teitzei - Stones

Image
Chapter Ki Teitzei begins with four themes, in the following order: 1. During a war, a soldier may see a beautiful woman among the prisoners and wish to marry her (after 30 days of preparation) 2. If (after cohabitation with her) he no longer desires her, then he must let her go free 3. If a man has a second wife, one beloved, and the other hated, and the hated one gives birth to his firstborn son, then he must treat him like a firstborn and give him a double portion as an inheritance. 4. If a man has a son who is deviates (from the path of the Torah) and is disobedient, etc. RASHI asks: why does the Torah describe these events side by side and in that exact order? Then he explains that: Torah does not want the warrior to marry this foreign woman, but if he does marry her (point 1), then as a result he will receive points 2,3,4, i.e. in the end he 2) will stop loving her, 3) will hate her, and 4) she will birth to him a rebellious, disobedient son, etc. It is interesting to note here t...

Bamidbar/Korach - Power To Repent

Image
Despite the fact that the sons of Korach fell into the pit, Torah says that they did not die. Rashi explains that they did not die because they repented in their hearts in time. Question: where does the Torah hint long before this episode that the sons of Korach will fall into the pit, but will not die? Or, in other words, where did they get the strength to repent? For example, Yehoshua did not sin because Moshe prayed for him, and added the letter "Yod" to his name, for there was a possibility that without this help he would not survive. So, who prayed for the sons of Korach and gave them the strength to repent and survive? In my opinion, the following answer may be offered: Korach's fall into the pit has some parallels with the story of Yosef's fall into the pit. For example: 1. Korach (by spiritual forces) was thrown into a pit. Yosef (by his brothers) was thrown into a pit 2. The pit of Korach was in the desert (midbar). Yosef's pit is also said to have been i...

Image

Image

Bereishis/Bereishis - Rashi in Torah

Image
Torah begins with the word בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית (Bereishis - in the Beginning) RASHI comments on this word with saying: "Omar Rabbi Yitzchak..." - said Rabbi Yitskchak... Why is RASHI begin his commentary on the Torah with these three words? To make a suggestion and a hint that the letters of the word Bereishis contain the initial letters of his own name בְּ - Ben (son of) רֵ - Rabbi א - Omar (say, teach) שִׁ֖ - Shlomo י - Yitzchak ת - Torah Which can be rearranged to say רֵ -Rabbi שִׁ֖ -Shlomo בְּ -Ben י -Yitzchak א -Omar ת -Torah, meaning: Rabbi Shlomo Ben Yitzchak Teaches Torah. And for this reason every child "Bereishis" - "at the Beginning" of his life - begins learning Torah with RASHI's commentary.

Bereishis/Lech Lecha - Covenant of LOVE

Image
In parsha Lech Lecha, God appears to Avram and tells him to preform the commandment of circumcision, which will form a special covenant of LOVE between them: I will give My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly. (Gen. 17:2)     Which RASHI explains that MY COVENANT refers to a covenant of LOVE and a covenant regarding the land. The covenant of land is easy to understand, because that refers to the Holy Land that He gave to the descendants of Avraham. But what about the covenant of LOVE? Where do we see that? But indeed we can see the covenant of LOVE derived from the text itself, for the next verse says: As for Me, here is My covenant with you; you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.    The word father in Hebrew is  אַ֖ב  AV, and tha...
